This happened with my younger sons hiking boots last year. They were bought brand new at the end of the previous April but when he went to wear them in September they were two sizes too small!
I think all of my kids have reached a point where they are not growing so much and it really is nice. Now my oldest is growing outward instead of upward and he is asking for jeans with bigger waists for his birthday! :) (Never thought this day would come!!!)
